I awoke this morning to another tragedy in our city. Just a few weeks ago we had two officers killed in the line of duty and now just last night another officer was shot and killed in the line of duty. Just when our city had rallied together and began the long journey of healing we experience another tragedy. We must not lose hope. I am praying God’s grace over our city. Sunday at City on a Hill Church we began our Prayer Initiative for our city partnering with Transform Our World to cover all 1199 streets in our city in prayer. If our city ever needed prayer it is now. If our city ever needed the Church of Jesus Christ to rise up in faith it is now. March 9 we will begin 47 days of prayer Seeking God for our City as a church partnering with numerous others churches in the Tampa Bay area. A song by Clint Brown keeps playing in my heart this morning and I want to share it with you.
God of the City
“Lord I praise You. Lord I glorify Your Name. And if the sun said I won’t rise and dark clouds fill my skies, Lord just know that I will always give you praise. And when trouble’s on the way I will always say no matter come what may I ‘ll always give you praise.”
No matter what we will seek God’s face. God is our ever present help in times of trouble. My heart grew faint at the news of this tragedy. My heart broke for this family and our city. Right away the Word of God came to me from Psalm 61.
1 Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. 2 From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. 3 For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.4 I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.5 For you, God, have heard my vows; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name. 6 Increase the days of the king’s life, his years for many generations. 7 May he be enthroned in God’s presence forever; appoint your love and faithfulness to protect him. 8 Then I will ever sing in praise of your name and fulfill my vows day after day.
Right now our city needs Jesus and no one else will do. I lift my eyes up to the mountains where does my help come from it comes from you Lord. You are the maker of earth and heaven and there is nothing that’s too hard for you. I hope that every believer in our city and every church in our city will rally together and call upon the Lord Jesus Christ asking for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. I pray for spiritual renewal in our city to the glory of God. I pray a revival will sweep through our city sweeping away the darkness and that the light of God’s love will shine brighter than ever even in the midst of this incredible and horrific tragedy. I pray for this precious family who has lost their loved one and for a city who has lost another hero. God, You are the God of the city. We need you.
I will end this blog with the words to the song God of this City. God we need your grace.
You’re the God of this City. You’re the King of these people. You’rethe Lord of this nation. You are! You’re the Light in this darkness, You’re the Hope to the hopeless, You’re the Peace to the restless You are! There is no one like our God, There is no one like our God. For greater things have yet to come and greater things are still to be done in this City.
